What a cut-and-shut actually is
Rather than repairing one seriously damaged vehicle, a cut-and-shut combines the intact half of two separately damaged vehicles of the same make and model — often one written off at the front, one at the rear — cut at roughly the middle of the car and welded together. Done well, it can be cosmetically close to invisible. Done badly, or done at all, it's dangerous: the weld join isn't an engineered crash structure, and the car's behaviour in a subsequent collision is unpredictable regardless of how solid the join looks or feels in normal driving.
A cut-and-shut vehicle's structural integrity in a crash is fundamentally compromised, no matter how well the weld was executed. This isn't a cosmetic defect to negotiate around — if you have real suspicion, walk away and consider reporting it.
Where the join usually sits
Look for the join around the B-pillar area (between the front and rear doors) or occasionally further forward or back depending on where each donor vehicle's damage was. Check for:
- Panel gap inconsistency — a slight but noticeable change in the gap width or alignment between panels on either side of a suspected join point, compared to the rest of the car.
- Paint or texture mismatch — even a good respray sometimes shows a subtle line or transition where two originally different body colours or paint batches meet.
- Underneath, along the floor pan — check for a visible weld seam running across the floor pan, especially one that looks continuous and hand-done rather than the spot-weld pattern a factory uses. Factory welds follow a very regular, repeated pattern; repair welds are usually a continuous bead that's been ground down and painted over.
Use a paint thickness gauge at the suspected join

Check the VIN and chassis number carefully
The VIN should be consistent everywhere it appears on the vehicle — the dash plate, the windscreen etching, the door jamb sticker, and stamped into the chassis itself. A cut-and-shut sometimes carries two different underlying VIN-stamped sections if the rebuild wasn't done carefully, or shows signs of a re-stamped or tampered plate. Seatbelt anchor points and structural hardware
Seatbelt anchor points are bolted to the vehicle's structure at specific factory locations. Misaligned, re-drilled, or oddly positioned anchor points — especially if they don't match what you'd see on an identical, undamaged example of the same model — are a serious warning sign.
A cut-and-shut is usually sold quickly and cheaply relative to the model's normal market value, because the seller wants it gone before closer inspection. A well-priced or slightly-below-market car isn't automatically suspicious, but a significantly underpriced one with an otherwise clean story is worth the extra scrutiny above.
The weld seam and the VIN can't be hidden as easily as the paint
A cut-and-shut can look genuinely clean from a normal walk-around. Checking the floor pan for a repair-style weld seam, the paint thickness at a suspected join, and the VIN consistency across every location it appears are the three checks that actually catch it.
