The biting point test
The "biting point" is where the clutch pedal starts to engage as you release it — the point where the car begins to pull. On a healthy clutch, this happens somewhere in the middle of the pedal's travel. On a worn clutch, the biting point creeps higher and higher (closer to the top of the pedal's travel) as the friction material wears down. Pay attention to where it engages every time you pull away during the test drive — if it feels like it's near the very top of the pedal travel, or if it seems to shift noticeably between one pull-away and the next, that's a clutch nearing the end of its life.
The slipping test
Slipping is the clearest sign of a worn clutch: the engine revs rise without a proportional increase in road speed, most noticeable accelerating hard or climbing a hill in a higher gear than you'd normally use. If the car seems to struggle to gain speed despite the engine clearly working, that's slipping, not just a gutless engine.
The handbrake hill-start test
On an incline, with the handbrake engaged, put the car in first gear and slowly release the clutch while gently applying throttle, without releasing the handbrake. A healthy clutch will start to strain against the handbrake and you'll feel the engine begin to labour well before the biting point is fully released. A worn clutch will let the engine rev higher with less resistance before it starts to bite, or will bite only right at the very top of the pedal's travel.
A distinct burning smell after several hill starts, stop-start traffic, or repeated clutch-riding manoeuvres (like a tight parking situation) points at a clutch that's already being worked hard — worth noting even if the test drive itself feels acceptable.
Judder — and the dual-mass flywheel question
A judder or shudder specifically when pulling away from a stop, distinct from ordinary engine vibration, can mean either a worn or contaminated clutch plate, or — on diesel and many newer turbo petrol cars — a failing dual-mass flywheel (DMF). A DMF is a separate, more expensive component from the clutch itself, designed to smooth out engine vibrations, and its failure is a known issue on certain models. A rattling noise specifically at idle in neutral, which quietens or disappears once you press the clutch pedal, is a classic DMF symptom worth mentioning to a specialist if you hear it.
Listening for the release bearing
With the engine running and the car in neutral, press the clutch pedal down and listen for a rumbling or grinding noise that appears specifically when the pedal is depressed and goes away when it's released. This points at a worn release (or thrust) bearing — a relatively inexpensive part on its own, but one that's usually replaced at the same time as the clutch since accessing it requires the same labour.
Hilly cities and heavy traffic — Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban's inner-city routes — both wear a clutch faster than open-road driving. A manual car that's spent its life doing a hilly city commute has had a harder life on its clutch than the mileage alone suggests, similar to the traffic-and-DSG relationship covered in our DSG gearbox guide.
Where the biting point sits tells you almost everything
A biting point near the top of the pedal's travel, slipping under load, or a burning smell after hill starts are each, on their own, enough reason to budget for a clutch replacement — a cost worth knowing before you agree a price, not after.
