What a CVT actually is
A CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) doesn't use fixed gears at all. Instead, a steel belt or chain runs between two variable-diameter pulleys, and the transmission continuously adjusts the pulley diameters to change the effective ratio — stepless, rather than the discrete 1st-2nd-3rd shifts of a conventional gearbox. It's common across the SA market: Nissan's Xtronic CVT (X-Trail, Qashqai, Micra), Honda, Subaru, and Toyota hybrids all use some form of it.
The "rubber-band" feel is normal — don't mistake it for a fault
The most common first reaction to a CVT is that something feels wrong: under hard acceleration, the engine revs climb and hold at a high RPM while road speed builds up gradually behind it, instead of the rev-drop-rev-drop pattern of a normal automatic shifting through gears. This is completely normal CVT behaviour and not a sign of slipping. What you're checking for is different — see below.
Some manufacturers have had well-publicised CVT reliability concerns and extended-warranty campaigns in various markets, Nissan's Xtronic among them. If you're seriously considering a specific model, ask a dealer to check the VIN for any open campaign or extended warranty relevant to the gearbox before you buy.
What to actually check on the test drive
- Shuddering or jerking from a standstill — a genuine warning sign, distinct from the normal rubber-band feel, and usually points at belt or pulley wear.
- Whining or grinding under load — accelerating up an incline or overtaking should sound smooth, not strained or metallic.
- Hesitation before the car responds to throttle input, especially pulling away from a stop.
- Overheating protection kicking in — some CVTs cut power noticeably if the transmission overheats on a long, hard drive; hard to test in a short viewing, but worth asking about directly if the car's done towing or heavy loads.
The fluid service most owners don't know about
CVT fluid is a specific formulation — it is not interchangeable with regular automatic transmission fluid, and using the wrong fluid can cause exactly the belt-slip symptoms described above. Most manufacturers specify a change interval somewhere around 40,000–60,000 km, but because it doesn't get the same attention as engine oil, it's one of the most commonly skipped services on a CVT car. Check the service book specifically for a CVT fluid change line item — "serviced regularly" with no CVT-specific stamp anywhere is a gap, not a clean bill of health.
Like a dual-clutch DSG, CVT issues are often most noticeable on a cold transmission. If a seller has warmed the car up before you arrive, ask to switch it off, let it cool, and start your test drive from cold.
Reading fault codes

Shuddering or whining combined with no evidence of a CVT fluid service is the combination to walk away from, or to price a transmission overhaul into your offer. CVT repairs are specialised and not cheap — get an actual quote from a brand specialist before committing either way.
Know what's normal before you judge what isn't
The rubber-band engine note is a CVT doing exactly what it's designed to do. Shuddering, whining, hesitation, and a missing CVT-specific service history are the real warning signs — and a cold-start test drive is where you'll actually find them.
