How it's different from DSG or CVT

A conventional automatic uses a torque converter — a fluid coupling — rather than clutches or a belt to transmit power, which is why it feels smoother and less mechanical than a dual-clutch DSG or a CVT. It's the gearbox most buyers already have some intuition for. That familiarity is exactly why people skip checking it properly: it "feels fine" on a short test drive even when it's carrying real problems.

Check the fluid — colour, smell, and level

Brown or dark fluid with a burnt smell means it's overheated or badly degraded — a real red flag, not a minor maintenance gap.

The "sealed for life" myth

Many modern automatics are marketed as sealed for life, with no dipstick and no scheduled fluid change. In practice, "life" in that claim often assumes lighter use than SA's climate and traffic conditions deliver. High-mileage cars, cars used for towing, or cars that have spent their life in heavy stop-start traffic benefit from a fluid change regardless of what the manual implies — ask a transmission specialist rather than assuming "sealed" means "never needs attention."
