Petrol vs Diesel in South Africa — Which One Actually Suits How You Drive

The honest answer isn't "diesel is cheaper" or "petrol is simpler". It's which engine matches how you actually use a car. Buy the wrong one for your driving and you'll pay for it — in fuel, in repairs, or in a clogged filter that wasn't your fault. Here's how to decide before you commit.

The core difference, in plain terms

A petrol engine ignites a fuel-air mix with a spark plug. A diesel engine squeezes the air so hard it ignites the fuel on its own, no spark needed. That single difference drives everything else.

Diesel fuel carries more energy per litre and burns more efficiently, so a diesel covers more kilometres on the same volume and produces far more pulling power (torque) low down — which is why bakkies, SUVs and anything that tows or carries loads tend to be diesel. Petrol engines rev higher and run smoother and quieter, and the cars are usually cheaper to buy and cheaper to fix.

Petrol suits you if…

Diesel suits you if…

  • You do long, regular highway runs

The short-trip diesel trap

This is the mistake that catches the most buyers, so it gets its own section. Almost every modern diesel has a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that traps soot. To clean itself, the DPF needs a "regeneration" — a burn-off that only happens once the engine is good and hot, typically after a sustained run at highway speed.

If a modern diesel only ever does short, cold, stop-start city trips, the DPF never gets hot enough to regenerate. Soot builds up, warning lights appear, the car drops into limp mode, and you're facing a forced regen or a filter replacement that can run into many thousands of rand. A diesel bought for the school run and the shops is a diesel set up to fail.

"Diesel is more economical, so it must be the smart buy." Not if you drive short distances in town. A city-only modern diesel clogs its DPF and becomes a repair magnet. For that driving pattern, petrol is almost always the right call.

Don't buy diesel just because "diesel is cheaper"

The price relationship between diesel and petrol flips around constantly in SA, because they're priced on different international products and diesel isn't regulated at the pump the way petrol is. In some months diesel is the cheaper litre; in others it's dearer than 95. As an illustration, the June 2026 adjustment saw inland 95 unleaded climb to a record R28.06 per litre while diesel users received significant relief with a notable price drop the same month — the gap had reversed from earlier in the year.

So "diesel is cheaper" is the wrong frame. Diesel's real advantage is that you burn fewer litres for the same distance, plus the torque. Whether that beats a petrol depends on your annual mileage against diesel's higher purchase price and pricier servicing — not on the pump price in any single month. The 10ppm vs 50ppm point most diesel buyers miss

Diesel comes in two sulphur grades in SA: 500ppm (often labelled 0.05%) and the cleaner 50ppm/10ppm (0.005%). Modern diesels with a DPF need the low-sulphur grade. Putting higher-sulphur diesel into a car that requires the cleaner fuel can clog the DPF and trigger faults — exactly like using the wrong oil spec. Lots of long-distance, high-mileage or towing driving? Diesel earns its keep. Mostly short city trips and modest mileage?
